Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a singer who was born in Newark, New Jersey on 9th August 1963. The parents of her are gospel superstars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick sings as well. As a young girl, Houston started performing professionally in the choir of her church. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's single from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mother. Her mother, Jermaine, and Lou Rawls were some of the artists she backed up. Also, she was a model for Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her vocals with the New York-based group Material have attracted record companies of all sizes which included Arista. She signed with Arista in 1983 where she continued to work for the rest of her career. In 1985, Whitney Houston's debut album turned out to be the best-selling debut album ever. Songs like The Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know If You Give Good Love or the song Saving the Day and All My Love were all released from the album. The songs allowed Houston to reach 7 US top tens that surpassed even those of the Beatles. The album came out in 1987, and it sold over 25 million copies around the world. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles Where Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her debut album. It was, however the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most popular artists. While the movie itself and the performances in it weren't widely reviewed, the soundtrack album as well as her cover of Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You was the top of charts for albums and singles for months, and was sold at 44 million copies across the globe.
